Liam Dawson Announces Retirement from First-Class Cricket

Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson has declared his immediate retirement from first-class cricket. The 36-year-old will continue to represent Hampshire in the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup competitions but has decided that now is the appropriate time to step away from the red-ball format.

This season, Hampshire, also known as the Rose and Crown, have played five County Championship matches, securing one win and suffering four defeats, placing them at the bottom of Division One. Dawson, a left-arm spin bowler, participated in four of these matches and took seven wickets. He was absent from the home fixture against Glamorgan due to injury, a match Hampshire lost by an innings and 69 runs.

Reasoning Behind Retirement

Dawson explained that his decision aims to extend his playing career in white-ball cricket formats.

"This is a decision that I haven't taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right," he told Hampshire's official website.

He expressed pride in his long-standing association with Hampshire, having played over 200 games for the county and cherishing the memories made with numerous teammates.

"I'm extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years.
I'm fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we've had.
To the fans and members who have turned out over the years, I can't thank you enough for your support. Hampshire will always be my home."

Career Achievements and Contributions

Throughout his career, Dawson has amassed more than 10,000 runs and taken in excess of 350 wickets across over 200 appearances for Hampshire. His international experience includes four Test matches for England against India and South Africa, with his latest Test appearance occurring last summer at Old Trafford.

Within Hampshire's history, only Robin Smith, Jimmy Adams, and James Vince have scored more runs than Dawson. His batting record includes 54 half-centuries and 17 centuries, with a highest score of 171 achieved against Kent at Canterbury in 2022.

Dawson signed a new three-year contract with Hampshire in 2025 and is set to return to the Utilita Bowl for Hampshire's first T20 match of the season on 22 May.

Comments from Hampshire Cricket Leadership

Giles White, Hampshire's director of cricket, praised Dawson's contributions to the club.

"Liam has been an outstanding servant to Hampshire Cricket," White said.
"He leaves a huge hole in the team and will be hard to replace, especially for the remainder of this Championship season.
He is the only Hampshire player of the modern era to represent the club in over 200 first-class appearances, which underlines just how rare an achievement that is at this level.
We support Liam's decision and are delighted he remains fully committed to the white-ball game. We have no doubt he will continue to be a match-winner for Hampshire for years to come. He remains a hugely important part of our plans."
