Glamorgan Achieves Historic Home Victory Against Somerset

Sean Dickson of Glamorgan faced his former county Somerset for the first time in a remarkable match at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, during the fourth day of the Rothesay County Championship, Division One.

Match Scores:

  • Somerset 354: Abell 86; Norton 3-75 & 157: Abell 71; Norton 4-61, van der Gugten 3-25, Hadley 3-28
  • Glamorgan 205: Kellaway 59; Pretorius 3-50 & 285-8: Dickson 76, Tribe 52, Hadley 50*; Pretorius 4-74, Overton 3-60

Glamorgan (19 points) defeated Somerset (6 points) by two wickets, marking a historic first home victory in Division One. The match was highlighted by Sean Dickson’s impressive 76 runs against the county that released him last season, and nightwatchman Ryan Hadley’s unbeaten 50, who faced more deliveries in this match than in his previous 19 first-class games combined.

The run chase was tense and demanding, as Somerset’s seam bowling attack, led by Craig Overton’s excellent 3-60 on the final day, challenged Glamorgan at every turn. This victory represents Glamorgan’s second consecutive win, while Somerset suffered their second loss.

Prior to this match, Glamorgan had only recorded four wins in the top division, all of which were away games.

Somerset’s Abell and Pretorius Set the Stage

Resuming at 140-5, Glamorgan’s overnight batsmen, nightwatchman Hadley and former Somerset player Sean Dickson, proceeded cautiously, playing and missing regularly, mirroring the cautious approach seen throughout the game.

Somerset’s pace attack, consisting of Lewis Gregory, Jake Ball, Migael Pretorius, and Craig Overton, maintained pressure by delivering multiple maiden overs. At one point, Somerset believed they had secured an lbw dismissal, but umpire Paul Pollard instead adjusted his hat, denying the appeal.

Hadley, who arrived in Wales with a first-class batting average below four, demonstrated resilience and a combination of sound judgment and fortune under the new floodlights, which were used for Championship matches at Sophia Gardens for the first time.

Meanwhile, Dickson showed determination against his former teammates, holding firm until the new ball was introduced. He struck two fours off a Gregory over and followed with three boundaries off Overton, taking Glamorgan to 202-5 at lunch.

Dickson reached a cautious half-century off 99 balls but was soon dropped at slip off Ball. Together with Hadley, they added 114 runs before Overton secured an lbw dismissal against Dickson, who had faced 154 balls and hit 10 fours.

Chris Cooke survived a strong appeal in the same over, but another appeal from Pretorius shortly after, with 28 runs still required, kept Somerset’s hopes alive.

Hadley then struck a powerful six over deep square-leg, only the second six of his first-class career, as tension mounted with a caught-behind appeal being turned down.

By tea, Glamorgan had reduced the target to 14 runs, but Overton dismissed Timm van der Gugten for six, extending the suspense.

A precise straight drive from Hadley brought Glamorgan within one run of victory, though he faced another fierce lbw appeal from Pretorius before finally reaching an unlikely 50 with the winning boundary off his 231st ball faced.

Upcoming Fixtures

Following this match, Glamorgan will travel to Warwickshire, while Somerset will host Sussex in the next round starting on Friday, 15 May.
