Pitch Issues Lead to Match Abandonment at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium
A domestic cricket match in the West Indies was abandoned due to concerns over a dangerous pitch after batter Jeremiah Louis was struck on the helmet.
Jeremiah Louis, playing for the Leeward Islands, was hit by a length ball from Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies seamer Jayden Seales. The delivery unexpectedly reared and struck Louis on the side of his head during the first session of day three.
Following the impact, Louis collapsed to the ground, removed his helmet, and expressed frustration by beating the pitch. He then kicked his helmet toward a short-leg fielder before walking off towards the pavilion.
A statement from Cricket West Indies confirmed that Louis was taken to hospital and is currently in stable condition with a possible concussion.
"Following discussions with the curator, it was determined that the pitch could not be safely repaired without creating an unfair advantage and was therefore deemed unfit to resume, resulting in the match being abandoned as a draw,"the statement said.
The match, held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, was called off due to the playing surface exhibiting "unpredictable and uneven behaviour, raising serious concerns for player safety."
Before the abandonment, Jayden Seales had taken all seven wickets as the Leeward Islands were at 140-7.
The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, which regularly hosts international cricket matches, is scheduled to host the final of the West Indies' domestic first-class tournament starting 17 May.
Cricket West Indies assured that
"all necessary resources and expertise will be deployed to ensure the preparation of a safe and competitive playing surface."
