Runaway Bull Forces Cricket Match Cancellation
A cricket match was abandoned after a young bull weighing approximately 800kg escaped from a farm and charged onto the playing field, disrupting the game.
The incident occurred during a North East Premier League fixture at Burnopfield Cricket Club near Newcastle on Saturday evening. Despite attempts to remove the animal, the match was called off.
Martin Oswell, director of Burnopfield Cricket Club, explained that the bull had escaped from a nearby farm and traveled about a mile before arriving at the cricket ground around 3pm.
Safety concerns quickly emerged as the bull was seen charging at players and farmers trying to recapture it.
Police were called to the scene, and the bull eventually left the field on its own.
“Two of the farmers tried to stop the bull and it actually hit one of them. He was OK but I mean the beast probably weighed about 800kg. It was a juvenile bull, incredibly fit, athletic – quite frankly, it was quite dangerous.”
Oswell added that efforts to remove the bull were unsuccessful and the match could not resume before the cutoff time.
“We couldn’t get rid of it. There was no chance that the game was going to restart before the cutoff time. At first it was quite novel, it was quite funny – but we never thought it was going to impact on our game being abandoned.”
The bull’s owner attempted to lure it off the field by bringing a cow to the cricket club, but this effort failed.
“The farmer who owns the bull arrived at the ground and tried at first to sort of cajole it and get it into a pen, but it failed. The bull was very frightened – it was spooked.”

Match Details and Impact
At the time the match was interrupted, Burnopfield Cricket Club, who are second in the North East Premier League, had scored 226 runs. Their opponents, Hetton Lyons, were 12 for one when play was halted.
