Friday's Round-Up
Jordan Cox, recently returning from six weeks on the IPL bench and buoyed by an England call-up, delivered a commanding unbeaten 184 against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Essex’s Cox reached his century off just 73 balls, achieving the milestone with a powerful six that cleared the ground. Matt Critchley was dismissed just before stumps for 97, followed shortly by nightwatchman Jamie Porter.
Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone, playing his first Championship match for Lancashire since 2021, took five wickets for 20 runs in 46 balls at Blackpool. Utilizing a mix of leg and off-spin, Livingstone contributed to Kent’s dramatic collapse from 111 for two to 178 all out on a damp pitch after being asked to bat. Lancashire’s 17-year-old Joe Moores made an impressive first-class debut, taking a catch and executing a neat stumping.
Glamorgan endured a difficult first day at Hove, being bowled out for 155. Sussex’s Indian left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat claimed four wickets under heavy skies, with all ten Glamorgan batters dismissed caught. Ollie Robinson, Gus Atkinson, and a rapid Jofra Archer were observed bowling in the nets under the supervision of England fast-bowling coach Troy Cooley.
Jordan Hermann, in good form following a century for South Africa A against the Lions, was the cornerstone of Somerset’s innings with 106 at Trent Bridge. However, he inadvertently caused James Rew’s dismissal when a straight drive was deflected by Dillon Pennington’s fingertip onto the stumps as Rew was backing up. It was a positive day for another member of the Rew family, younger brother Thomas, aged 18, who scored 68 in just his second Championship appearance. Nottinghamshire responded strongly with the new ball.
Derbyshire’s current standout player Ben Aitchison took four wickets against Durham at Chester-le-Street, where England selector Marcus North was also present. Shoaib Bashir, recently released by England, bowled 11 overs in the match.
Will Luxton achieved a maiden Championship century for Yorkshire against Warwickshire at Scarborough. Northamptonshire’s Saif Zaib regained form with an impressive 142 against Gloucestershire, supported by Nathan McSweeney’s 117. Worcestershire limited Middlesex to 291 for eight at New Road.
Good morning from a Northern train en route to Blackpool north. The further west the journey progresses, the wetter the conditions become, with soggy elderflower and scowling pylons visible through the train window. Despite the weather, hope remains strong that play will commence at 11am at Stanley Park and elsewhere across the country. We invite you to join us for ongoing coverage.
