Saturday's round-up
Nottinghamshire’s Olly Stone, whose fragile body has broken with heartbreaking regularity, delivered a commanding performance against Leicestershire in their East Midlands derby. His bowling, fierce and marked by chopstick-sharp accuracy, dismantled stumps and troubled batters alike. Stone recorded figures of five-for-41, his best for Nottinghamshire and his first five-wicket haul since 2019. Earlier in the match, Ben Green had taken seven wickets for 112 runs as Nottinghamshire’s innings concluded on 490.
At Taunton, Somerset’s innings faltered similarly to Yorkshire’s earlier effort. Jack White took four wickets for 41 runs as Somerset lost their last seven wickets for just 73 runs. The in-form Tom Abell reached a half-century, while Will Smeed, gradually adapting to red-ball cricket, remained unbeaten on a cautious 36. Thomas Rew, brother of James Rew, was dismissed for a duck on his Championship debut. Rain interrupted play significantly after lunch.
With a potential opening spot for England at stake, Durham’s Emilio Gay responded confidently with an unbeaten 75 at Lord’s, scoring at a brisk pace. Ben McKinney, also noted in reports, contributed a more measured 46. Earlier, Ryan Higgins scored his first century in nearly two years, and Zafar Gohar added 56 as Middlesex surpassed 400 runs. Ben Raine was the standout bowler for Durham, taking five wickets for 58 runs.
Should Brendon McCullum consider a change in strategy, he need only look to the Oval, where Dom Sibley compiled a steady unbeaten 116 for Surrey, marking his second consecutive century. Rory Burns and Ryan Patel contributed quicker half-centuries, while Sussex’s Henry Crocombe, who struck Burns on the hand before dismissing him, delivered an impressive bowling spell.
At Canterbury, Luis Reece produced a memorable innings, hitting five sixes to bring Derbyshire closer to Kent’s first innings total of 352 than anticipated. He and Shoaib Bashir (12) added 56 runs for the last wicket as Derbyshire reached 304, much to Kent’s frustration. Rain halted play, but not before Rory Haydon dismissed Zak Crawley lbw for 15, spoiling his afternoon.
Ricardo Vasconcelos scored his second century of the season in an entertaining innings, helping Northamptonshire gain the upper hand against Worcestershire at New Road. Saif Zaib, whose excellent form last year earned him several awards, compiled a swift 75.
At Southampton, Kiran Carlson achieved his first Championship double century, complemented by a career-best 143 from Zain ul Hassan, before Glamorgan declared. Rain then interrupted Hampshire’s response.
