Sciver-Brunt Set to Return for Semi-Final
England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been declared fit to return from injury for the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa on Thursday.
Sciver-Brunt, 33, who has not featured since England's second match of the tournament against Ireland due to a recurrence of a calf injury, resumed batting practice in the nets on Wednesday morning. She also trained on Tuesday at Lord's, and the England team management have confirmed her readiness to play as they aim to secure their first World Cup title since 2017.
"We are confident I am fully fit," Sciver-Brunt told BBC Test Match Special.
Recovery and Team Implications
The captain has undergone rare magnetic resonance therapy to aid her recovery. She is expected to replace Sophia Dunkley in England's playing XI. Dunkley was observed speaking with coach Charlotte Edwards shortly before Sciver-Brunt addressed the media.
During Wednesday's session, Sciver-Brunt batted for approximately 30 minutes, demonstrating relative freedom in movement and the ability to advance down the pitch against spin bowling. However, there remain inherent risks as she did not participate in running or fielding drills outdoors, having worked indoors with England's physiotherapist at the start of the session.
With less than 72 hours remaining before the final on Sunday, the team is cautiously optimistic.
"We have tested it enough to be comfortable," she said. "What will happen out on the pitch will happen."
Significance of Sciver-Brunt’s Return
Should she be able to play, Sciver-Brunt’s presence will be a major boost for England. She is regarded as their best batter and a key leader. While Charlie Dean has performed admirably in her absence, Sciver-Brunt, along with Heather Knight and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, are the only players remaining from England’s last World Cup victory.
England have faced South Africa in two recent World Cup semi-finals, losing both—the 50-over World Cup last year and the T20 World Cup earlier in 2023. However, England enter Thursday’s match at The Oval as favorites, having advanced through the group stage undefeated.
South Africa, despite some inconsistent performances, progressed to the semi-finals after losing their opening match against Australia.
