Brisbane Heat Support Big Bash League Opening in Chennai
The Brisbane Heat have expressed their willingness to be among the first teams to play a Big Bash League (BBL) game overseas, potentially opening the 2026-27 tournament in Chennai, India.
Cricket Australia (CA) has reportedly received encouraging updates within the last 24 hours regarding their efforts to commence the upcoming BBL season in India.
This initiative aims to boost engagement in the Indian market and coincides with ongoing uncertainty surrounding the privatisation of BBL teams.
The next step involves determining which two teams will participate in the overseas fixture.
Brisbane Heat chief executive Terry Svenson expressed support for the Chennai proposal, highlighting Queensland’s backing of the plan.
“We’ve had the opportunity to discuss this with CA and are supportive of the initiative,” Svenson said.
“The Brisbane Heat have been one of the competition’s best performing teams off the field with a strong international following through social media, so we look forward to further discussions with CA.”
Cricket Australia initially proposed exploring the possibility of staging the first BBL game of the season abroad, with India—and Chennai in particular—identified as the preferred location.
According to Indian media reports, the Chennai cricket governing body has given in-principle approval and is awaiting final confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Several BBL franchises have indicated a preference to be the visiting team in Chennai rather than relinquishing a home game.
The Brisbane Heat are among those hoping to retain their full complement of five home games at the Gabba.
Melbourne’s Stars and Renegades have also expressed interest. Cricket Victoria chief executive Nick Cummins told the Sydney Morning Herald,
“We would love to be a part of that, and we would be happy to be the home team.”
The Sydney Thunder maintain connections to Chennai through Ravichandran Ashwin, who signed with the club last year as the first Indian player in the BBL before injury sidelined him. The Thunder are hopeful of re-signing Ashwin for the upcoming season.
However, the presence of Pakistani players in the BBL presents potential challenges, as historically, facilitating their participation in India has been difficult.
Most BBL teams have included Pakistani players on their rosters in previous seasons, and the overseas player draft is scheduled for later this year.
