Former Champions Eliminated Before Final Group Match

Australia have been eliminated from the T20 World Cup following the washout of Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland.

The rain-affected game resulted in Zimbabwe earning points, which ensured Australia could no longer surpass Zimbabwe or Sri Lanka at the top of the group standings, ending their tournament run.

Australia’s fate was largely sealed after losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. They had been relying on Ireland to defeat Zimbabwe on Tuesday to keep their hopes alive.

Even if Ireland had won, Australia would have needed Sri Lanka, who had already qualified for the Super Eight phase, to defeat Zimbabwe on Thursday to maintain a chance of progressing ahead of their final group match against Oman.

However, persistent rain in Kandy prevented any play, and the match was abandoned at 5:30 pm local time.

Zimbabwe Advances to Super 8 Phase

Zimbabwe’s accumulation of points from the abandoned match secured their progression to the Super 8 phase of the tournament.
