Wolvaardt takes stunning catch to dismiss Wareham

T20 World Cup, Group 1, Edgbaston

Australia 172-8 (20 overs): Litchfield 50 (24), Perry 36 (26); Mlaba 2-22

South Africa 107 (16.4 overs): Wolvaardt 44 (39); Wareham 3-13

Australia began their T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 65-run victory over fellow Group One contenders South Africa, establishing an early advantage in the pool.

With 50-over champions India also competing in this group, the contest for the two semi-final spots is expected to be intense. Australia set a challenging total of 172-8 and then confidently defended it.

Early breakthroughs came as Australia dismissed Sune Luus, Annerie Dercksen, and Nadine de Klerk within the first seven overs. South Africa attempted to rebuild through Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp, but Australia maintained pressure.

Although Australia dropped De Klerk during the powerplay, Georgia Wareham’s fielding interventions proved decisive. Wareham ran out the dangerous all-rounder Kapp for 12 with an accurate throw from the deep and then took a sharp low catch at cover to dismiss Wolvaardt for 44.

Wareham also contributed with the ball, taking 3-13, and added an important 32 runs with the bat. Australia then efficiently dismissed the lower order to bowl South Africa out for 107.

Under new captain Sophie Molineux, Australia’s batting was not at its best, losing wickets regularly, but their depth allowed them to post a competitive total. Phoebe Litchfield scored 50, while Ellyse Perry added 36 runs.

South Africa now face a crucial match against India on Sunday, 21 June, at the same venue.

Positive start to Molineux era

India, having won the 50-over World Cup last year, are considered strong contenders for this tournament. South Africa, after three near misses in world finals, and England, with an impressive start, also have high expectations.

This match served as a reminder of Australia’s enduring quality. Despite not winning the last two World Cups, they remain the team to beat.

Australia’s fielding was active, with Georgia Voll, Litchfield, Ashleigh Gardner, and Wareham all contributing catches. Annabel Sutherland, who has four Test hundreds, came in at number seven, demonstrating Australia’s batting depth.

Australia recovered from 62-4 and 133-6 without being contained. Apart from Voll, who was dismissed for a four-ball duck, nearly every player contributed runs.

South Africa may have misread the pitch conditions, opting for pace bowling, while Molineux and Alana King took two wickets each with spin. Gardner and Wareham also contributed wickets.

Molineux benefits from a variety of bowling options, and in their first tournament under her leadership, Australia displayed the same high standard expected of previous green and gold sides.
