Career Highlights
Beth Dobbin, the Scottish 200m record holder, has announced her retirement after contending with a serious and life-changing health issue for three years. The 31-year-old athlete represented Scotland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she secured a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.
Dobbin also competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, advancing to the semi-finals in the 200m event. Her international experience includes participation in three European Championships and two World Championships.
In 2018, Dobbin broke a Scottish 200m record that had stood for 34 years and was named British champion. Her personal best time of 22.50 seconds was achieved at the 2019 Anniversary Games in London.
Retirement Announcement
Dobbin shared the news of her retirement on social media, reflecting on her career and health challenges.
"There isn't space to list the highs I've experienced."
She chose not to disclose specific details about her illness but expressed pride in her athletic journey.
"I am very proud of my journey. From never getting close to making junior teams to breaking through at 24."
Discussing her time away from competition, Dobbin highlighted the difficulties of managing illness compared to injury.
"Unlike injuries, where you are surrounded by physio expertise, this often isn't the case with illness.
Instead it's been a journey of getting answers and trialing treatment.
On one hand it feels like my career has been cut short and it feels cruel not to be retiring on my own terms. On the other, I achieved so much more than I ever expected.
I may not be leaving the sport with an Olympic medal, but I'm leaving with many dreams fulfilled."
