YouTube Settles Social Media Addiction Lawsuit
Google's YouTube has reached a settlement in a social media addiction lawsuit filed by a 15-year-old teenager from Florida, marking a significant legal challenge for online platforms accused of contributing to a mental health crisis among children.
The teenager, identified by the initials R.K.C. in court documents, claimed that YouTube and other social media companies intentionally designed their platforms to be addictive.
"This matter has been amicably resolved and our focus remains on building age-appropriate products and parental controls that deliver on that promise," Google spokesman José Castañeda said in a statement to the BBC.
R.K.C. is also pursuing legal action against Instagram's parent company Meta, TikTok, and Snap Inc, with a trial currently scheduled to begin on 27 July.
This case follows a similar lawsuit brought by a 20-year-old California woman, known as K.G.M., who earlier this year secured a $6 million (£4.5 million) verdict against YouTube and Meta.
The outcome of that case was anticipated to influence hundreds of social media addiction lawsuits.
Snap and TikTok settled K.G.M.'s case prior to the trial.
"As jurors saw in the first bellwether trial, leadership at these social media companies have been strategizing for years to hook children early and maximize their usage," stated R.K.C.'s attorneys John Morgan and Emily Jeffcott.
They added that features such as autoplay and infinite scroll are "designed with the aim of increasing profits at the expense of the mental health of our youth."
Google told the BBC that it has been developing YouTube responsibly for over a decade, collaborating with families to provide safer and more helpful online experiences for young users.
