Trump Opens America’s 250th Celebration with Political Rally
President Donald Trump inaugurated the festivities marking America’s 250th year of independence with a rally that emphasized his presidency and political achievements.
Speaking at the Great American State Fair's opening ceremony on the National Mall, Trump declared a resurgence of the nation’s stature.
“I am thrilled to declare that America is back,”
he said.
“As you know very well, a short time ago we were a dead country. We were dead. Now we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world. We’re respected by everybody. Nobody’s laughing at us any more.”

During his address, Trump listed what he characterized as significant victories, including a preliminary agreement aimed at resolving the conflict with Iran, intensified immigration enforcement, and the passage of a tax bill. Referencing the historical context of the event, he remarked,
“In the American Revolution, they had a saying no tax on tea. But with the Great Big Beautiful Bill we did even better.”
Trump also highlighted initiatives he has led to enhance Washington, D.C., in preparation for the anniversary celebrations. Among these projects is the refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, which he aimed to transform to an "American flag blue" color for the occasion. The renovation has incurred costs of approximately $14.1 million and has encountered challenges such as an algae bloom and peeling of the polyurethane liner.
Addressing the liner’s deterioration, Trump reiterated an unsubstantiated claim that vandals were responsible for the damage, stating,
“Thugs, bad people.”
Prior to the president’s remarks, attendees on the National Mall waved star-spangled flags while the U.S. Marine Band performed to energize the crowd.
Performers and Participation Concerns
Initially, popular musical acts such as the Commodores, Martina McBride, and Young MC were scheduled to headline the opening ceremony. However, these and other performers withdrew, citing concerns over the event’s political undertones. Additionally, some states chose not to participate in the Great American State Fair for similar reasons.
In their stead, opera singer Christopher Macchio and country musician Lee Greenwood—known for his 1984 single "God Bless the USA," a song frequently associated with MAGA rallies—performed at the event.
Alexis Wilkins, girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel, sang the national anthem. Wilkins had announced her participation via social media on Tuesday and addressed online speculation regarding nepotism by stating,
“I was invited to sing this anthem on my own accord.”
Political Themes Amidst National Celebrations
Trump has framed America’s 250th birthday as a pivotal moment for the nation to renew its commitment to patriotism and faith. Although the anniversary events were initially promoted as nonpartisan and apolitical, many have evolved into occasions with MAGA themes. These include programs such as Make America Healthy Again Mondays and an Independence Day celebration featuring a campaign-style rally hosted by Trump.
The National Mall also served as the venue for another 250th anniversary event—a UFC fight—which raised ethical questions regarding the use of public space by a for-profit entity.
Additionally, Freedom 250 is scheduled to host the Patriot Games, a sporting event where high school students will compete in physical and mental challenges. Scholarship awards totaling $125,000 will be granted to one male and one female champion.
Controversies and Historical Revisions
The celebrations occur amid criticism directed at the Trump administration for promoting "revisionist" history. Early in his second term, Trump signed an executive order aimed at removing "ideological indoctrination" from public monuments. This directive led to the removal of materials referencing slavery, Indigenous peoples, and the climate crisis from national parks. However, a judge recently ordered the administration to restore some of these materials.
