Fatal Domestic Dispute in Muscatine, Iowa
Six individuals were fatally shot in Muscatine, Iowa, following a series of shootings believed to have originated from a domestic dispute, according to the Muscatine Police Department.
The suspected shooter, Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine, was also found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities indicated that the victims are believed to be family members of McFarland.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies called the shooting an "act of evil".
The incidents occurred on Monday at multiple locations within the city.
Police responded shortly after noon to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival at a residence, officers discovered four individuals with gunshot wounds, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
McFarland had left the residence prior to police arrival but was located shortly thereafter on a riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge. He sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and, despite medical aid, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Further investigation led detectives to another residence where a man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound. A subsequent search at a business address revealed an additional victim, also deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
Online mapping services identify the business location as a metal workshop.
"Preliminary findings indicate the shootings stemmed from a domestic-related dispute," the Muscatine Police Department stated. "All victims are believed to be family members of the deceased suspect."
Muscatine Police Chief Kies withheld the names and ages of the victims, noting that the investigation remains ongoing. He confirmed that the suspect had a prior criminal record but did not provide further details.
Muscatine is located in southwestern Iowa along the Mississippi River and has a population of approximately 23,500, according to US government data published last year.

Mayor Brad Bark expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, stating:
"Our hearts are heavy tonight after the tragic shootings that claimed innocent lives."
