Judge Declares Mistrial in Weinstein Rape Trial
A judge has declared a mistrial in the rape case against Harvey Weinstein after the New York jury reported being deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict.
This is the third occasion on which a New York jury has deliberated the case involving the 74-year-old former film executive, who remains incarcerated on separate charges.
Details of the Trial
The month-long trial focused on allegations that Weinstein raped aspiring actress Jessica Mann in a hotel room more than ten years ago. Initially, Weinstein was convicted of raping Mann; however, that verdict was subsequently overturned.
Allegations and Denials
Since October 2017, dozens of women have come forward with accusations of sexual misconduct, including rape, against Weinstein. He has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
Statements from Officials and Legal Teams
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg issued a statement indicating that prosecutors are evaluating whether to pursue another trial.
"While we are disappointed that the proceedings ended with a mistrial, we deeply respect the jury system and sincerely thank all of the jurors for their time and dedication,"
he said.
Weinstein's attorneys responded by asserting that the mistrial outcome reflects the extent to which public perception and prejudice against Weinstein have permeated society.
"The Manhattan District Attorney's Office should stop retrying the same case and focus its time and resources on the actual violent crime, chaos, and public safety issues impacting New Yorkers every day,"
their statement added.
