Thunderstorm Warning Issued Across Wales

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms affecting Wales, excluding Flintshire. The warning is in effect from 15:00 BST until 23:59 on Wednesday.

This alert follows an official heatwave declaration in Wales, which saw a new record set for the hottest May day on Tuesday.

Potential Impacts and Safety Concerns

The Met Office has cautioned about possible power outages, flooding, challenging driving conditions, and delays, with some bus and train services potentially facing cancellations.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds."

Power Outages and Transport Disruptions

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, thunderstorms caused high voltage faults in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, leaving 1,530 customers without power at one point.

According to National Grid, 138 customers remain without power currently.

Transport for Wales reported damage to the signalling system at Clarbeston Road, Pembrokeshire, caused by lightning strikes. This has resulted in service delays of up to 45 minutes in the affected area.
