Owner Found Guilty Over Fatal XL Bully Attack

A man has been found guilty of owning a dog that caused injury while dangerously out of control after his XL bully savaged an 84-year-old man.

John McColl died a month after the attack by the dog, named Toretto, which police officers in Warrington, Cheshire, had to shoot 10 times on 24 February 2025.

Sean Garner, now residing in Belle Vale, Liverpool, was convicted following a trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

The 31-year-old had previously admitted to two counts of possessing an XL bully without an exemption certificate. These charges related to Toretto and another dog, Malibu, which was found inside the same house.

McColl succumbed to his injuries five weeks after the incident, which occurred on Bardsley Avenue at approximately 18:00 GMT.

The court heard that at the time of the attack, the dog had hardly any food in its stomach and had guarded McColl

"like he was prey"
following the attack.
