Water-Related Deaths Increase to 11 Amid UK Heatwave

The number of water-related fatalities during the recent UK heatwave has risen to 11 following the recovery of two teenage boys' bodies in Kent and Oxford.

Emergency responders retrieved the body of a 14-year-old boy from the River Thames near Donnington Bridge, Oxford, at approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday. Thames Valley Police confirmed that the boy's family had been informed and that the death is being treated as "unexplained but not suspicious."

The other boy's body was recovered from a pond in Swanscombe, Kent. Authorities have also stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Several similar deaths are believed to be connected to outdoor swimming during the record-breaking heatwave, which saw temperatures reach highs in west London on Tuesday.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK has urged the public to "stop and think" before entering water, noting that

"Warmer weather unfortunately sees an increase in water-related incidents."

The hot weather is forecasted to persist in the coming days before easing over the weekend, according to the Met Office. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heat health alert for eastern and south-east England and London, effective from 4 pm on Thursday until 8 pm on Saturday.

The UKHSA warned that water-related incidents could rise during this period and highlighted the dangers of cold-water shock and drowning.
