Vandalism at Protected Sea Bird Site in Barra
Police have reported that vandals caused damage to a protected sea bird site located in Barra, part of the Western Isles.
Between Sunday evening and Monday morning, fences and warning signs surrounding the nesting area of little terns at Eoligarry Pier were destroyed.
The little tern, recognized as the UK's smallest tern species, is classified as a priority species for conservation efforts.
Police Scotland stated that those responsible for the damage could face legal consequences including up to six months imprisonment, a fine reaching £5,000, or both penalties.
In a call for public assistance, the police emphasized the importance of environmental protection and lawful conduct.
"It is everyone's responsibility to act within the law and to protect the environment and wildlife and these measures are part of a broader commitment to wildlife conservation and the protection of vulnerable species in the UK."
