Unite Union Reduces Labour Affiliation Fee Amid Birmingham Bin Dispute

The union Unite has decided to reduce the affiliation fee it pays to the Labour Party by 40%, citing dissatisfaction with the party's stance on the ongoing strike involving bin workers in Birmingham.

This reduction amounts to a £580,000 decrease in funding, which Unite described as unprecedented. The move reflects the frustration of its members, coming one year after the commencement of all-out industrial action in the city.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham commented on the situation, expressing the confusion among workers regarding Labour's position.

"Workers are scratching their heads asking whose side are Labour on."

The dispute originated from Birmingham City Council's decision to eliminate Waste Recycling and Collection Officer positions. Despite ongoing negotiations between Unite and the Labour-led council, no resolution has been reached to date.
