Incident at Seaton Carew Beach

Cleveland Police reported that two men died after attempting to assist children who were in difficulty in the sea.

The police were called to Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool at 15:45 BST following reports that two children were struggling in the water.

The men entered the water to help the children. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rescued the men from the sea, but both were pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The children were transported to hospital for medical evaluation and have been confirmed to be safe, according to the police.

Superintendent Glen Wand expressed condolences:

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of both the men involved in this tragic incident today."

The police stated that the deaths are not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner's review.

Additionally, specially trained officers are providing support to the families of the deceased men.
