Two Green Party Candidates Arrested
Two Green Party candidates participating in the forthcoming local elections in England have been arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred.
The Metropolitan Police stated that the arrests were made following an investigation initiated after "concerns" were raised on 21 April regarding "antisemitic material that had been posted online."
The Met confirmed:
"Police have arrested two women, aged 57 and 54, on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred online, an offence under section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986. They remain in police custody."
A spokesperson for the Green Party commented:
"This now a police matter. We won't be commenting at this stage."
It is understood by the BBC that one of the candidates has been suspended from the party.
Party Response
When questioned about the arrests during BBC Question Time, Green deputy leader Rachel Millward described the alleged remarks by the candidates as "abhorrent" and stated that they were "going through disciplinary process."
