Trump Responds to Prince Harry's Comments on Ukraine
US President Donald Trump stated that Prince Harry "is not speaking for the UK" following the Duke of Sussex's call for "American leadership" to assist in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
During a surprise visit to Ukraine on Thursday, Harry did not mention Trump by name but emphasized that now is "a moment for America, to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations – not out of charity but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability."
When questioned about these remarks, Trump described them as "great advice" and inquired,
"How's he doing? How's his wife? Please give her my regards."He further added,
"I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry."
Details of Prince Harry's Visit and Statements
Prince Harry's unannounced trip to Ukraine occurred just days after he departed Australia, where he and his wife Meghan, both no longer working members of the royal family, had visited privately.
Harry highlighted the United States' unique role in the situation, stating,
"The United States has a singular role in this story. Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine's sovereignty and borders would be respected."
Trump on Potential Meeting with Prince Harry and UK Royal Visit
The US president did not provide a direct answer when asked if he would invite Harry to dinner during the upcoming state visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla next week.
Regarding the King, Trump said,
"He's a friend of mine. We're really looking forward to it. We've spoken and we're going to have a great time."
He mentioned that the guests would be individuals who "love the UK," and expressed his own affection for the country before outlining what he perceived as key issues facing the UK.
Trump commented,
"I think they made a big mistake on energy. You should open up the North Sea in Aberdeen. You should open it up."He also stated,
"And the other thing is they've made a big mistake on immigration."
Upcoming Royal Visit to the US
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are scheduled to meet President Trump at the White House during their four-day visit to the United States, which begins on Monday.
The royal visit has attracted significant attention, especially after Trump told the BBC that it could "absolutely" help mend relations with the UK, which have been strained over the Iran war.
The BBC has reached out to both the palace and the Foreign Office for comment.
