Train Driver Shaun Burton Dies from Traumatic Injuries in Bedfordshire Crash
Shaun Burton, a 60-year-old train driver, died from traumatic injuries to the brain and chest following a train collision near Bedford, an inquest has revealed.
The fatal incident occurred on 19 June at Elstow, near Bedford, when Mr Burton's train collided with the rear of another service. The crash resulted in injuries to 162 individuals, with 102 requiring hospital treatment.
An inquest into Mr Burton's death commenced in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, but has been adjourned until a later, unspecified date.
Senior Coroner for Bedfordshire and Luton, Emma Whitting, stated at the hearing that the inquest would be paused pending the completion of reports from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police.
Mr Burton resided in Cambridgeshire and had served as a parish and district councillor, representing The Stukeleys ward on Huntingdonshire District Council.
The hearing, which lasted five minutes, included a statement read by the coroner's officer indicating that a consultant pathologist identified the cause of death as traumatic injuries to the brain stem and chest, with further investigations ongoing.
