Petrol Delivery to Tiree Amid Fuel Shortage

Thousands of litres of petrol have been delivered to Tiree following a risk of the island's sole filling station running out of fuel.

The shortage occurred after ferry operator CalMac redirected the island's usual vessel to a different route and substituted it with a ferry that lacked the capacity to transport a fuel tanker.

The community trust managing Crosspol Filling Station implemented a £25 limit on petrol purchases to safeguard the available supply.

CalMac temporarily employed the Small Isles' MV Lochnevis to transport a tanker carrying 17,000 litres of petrol to Tiree on Tuesday, an amount sufficient for approximately three to four weeks.

Ferry Fleet Challenges Contributing to Supply Issues

This situation arose about a month after CalMac acknowledged that nearly one-third of its ferry fleet serving the Clyde coast and islands was out of operation.

Many vessels required unplanned repairs, while others were undergoing scheduled maintenance.

Earlier this week, a CalMac spokesperson stated:

"The Tiree service has been operated by a vessel with smaller capacity while there has been widespread network disruption. We are aware that this has led to problems with fuel deliveries to the island, and we are working closely with the local community to find a solution to this."
