Three Inmates Receive Whole-Life Sentences for Murder

Three incarcerated men who fatally stabbed a fellow prisoner 25 times inside his cell have been sentenced to whole-life orders, ensuring they will never be released from prison.

Mark Fellows, 45, David Taylor, 64, and Lee Newell, 57, were convicted of murdering Kyle Bevan at HMP Wakefield on 4 November. The attack involved makeshift weapons, including one fashioned from a metal component taken from the back of a television.

Details of the Murder

Kyle Bevan, 33, was serving a life sentence with a minimum tariff of 28 years for the 2020 murder of his partner's two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Pembrokeshire.

The court heard that at approximately 17:30 on 4 November, Fellows, Taylor, and Newell were captured on CCTV following Bevan into his cell, where they "cornered him." They exited the cell less than five minutes later appearing to be in "a satisfied, job-done mood."

They then placed Bevan into his bed to create the impression that he was asleep, which delayed the discovery of his death until the following morning.

The judge noted that Fellows was observed near Bevan's cell twice that evening, "probably to check that he was dead."

"You chose him as your target as he had been convicted of the murder of a child,"
"Acting together you wounded him more than 25 times, several of those wounds were fatal."

Additional Information

The sentencing underscores the severity of the crime and the court's determination to impose the harshest penalties on those responsible for the murder within the prison system.
