Teenager Sentenced for Fatal Incident Outside Cardiff Club
A 19-year-old has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after being convicted of murder for driving into a couple outside a club, resulting in the death of a woman weeks later.
Kian Bateman deliberately drove his vehicle into Shelley Davies, 38, and her partner David Bratcher, 40, outside the 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club in Caerau, Cardiff, on 27 September last year. Both sustained serious injuries, and Davies died in hospital three weeks after the incident.
Details of the Incident
During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Bateman targeted the couple following an altercation involving Bratcher and Bateman's brother, Kai. Bateman's aunt, Louise, was also struck by the car during the incident.
Davies had been attending a reggae music event featuring artist and DJ General Levy at the social club with her partner on the night of the collision. She suffered multiple fractures to her ribs, arm, pelvis, and hip, along with numerous wounds and abrasions.
Complications from her injuries led to multiple infections and septic shock, which ultimately contributed to her death.
Bateman's Statements and Court Findings
Bateman admitted to inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, from balloons on the evening of the incident but denied that the substance caused him to feel aggressive or experience negative emotions.
"He said he drove the car to get away and had 'no knowledge' of colliding with anyone until his cousin called him the next morning."
Following his arrest, Bateman told police that his car had been surrounded by people and that he was "frightened" he was "going to be beaten up." However, prosecution barrister Michael Jones KC presented CCTV footage to jurors showing that the car was not surrounded by people at the time.
Bateman, who resides in Heol Muston, Ely, was found guilty of the murder of Shelley Davies. He was acquitted of the attempted murder charge regarding Bratcher but was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The court heard that Bateman did not stop or seek medical assistance after the collision. Instead, he drove at speed and abandoned his Seat Ibiza vehicle.
