Starmer Commits to Tackling Fuel Crisis Profiteering
Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to take firm action against companies in Northern Ireland that are "profiteering" amid the fuel crisis caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
The prime minister made these remarks during a visit to Northern Ireland, where he is scheduled to meet with party leaders and visit a community centre.
He emphasized that the government will not hesitate to intervene if companies "fleece customers or rip them off" by charging "unfair" prices for heating oil.
Highlighting that the majority of households in Northern Ireland depend on heating oil, Sir Keir stated that prices must be "fair transparent and justifiable and not inflated at the expense of working people."
Almost two-thirds of homes (62.5%) in Northern Ireland use oil for heating, the highest proportion among UK nations.

Industry data indicates that prices have more than doubled since the US attack on Iran.
Competition and Markets Authority Investigates Pricing Practices
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced it will engage with "suppliers and intermediaries" to assess whether there are concerns related to consumer protection laws.
The CMA will specifically examine if existing oil orders are being cancelled and customers subsequently offered new quotes at higher prices.
Sir Keir stated,
"If companies hike prices without justification the government will act."
He added,
"Global instability has real impacts on the lives of working people across the UK, and I know families in Northern Ireland are worried about what the war in the Middle East could mean for their finances.
Let me be clear we will not tolerate profiteering or unfair practices. If companies fleece customers or rip them off we will not hesitate to step in."
Starmer's Visit and Political Engagements
Sir Keir arrived in Northern Ireland on Wednesday night and attended a British-Irish gathering at a Belfast hotel.
During his address to the guests, he spoke about the importance of resetting the relationship with Dublin.
He also expressed his intention to meet with people in Belfast whose lives are affected by conflicts abroad and the domestic approaches taken.
The government has already requested the CMA to urgently review extortionate pricing.
Pressure for Increased Financial Support
Despite these measures, Sir Keir is expected to face pressure from local party leaders to provide additional financial assistance to families struggling with energy costs.
This follows a meeting on Wednesday between local MPs and Treasury officials regarding securing more support.
Some MPs expressed disappointment afterward due to the absence of a commitment to offer practical help.
