Edinburgh Seat Changes

The Scottish National Party (SNP) lost two seats in Edinburgh, with the Scottish Greens winning Edinburgh Central and the Scottish Liberal Democrats capturing Edinburgh Northern.

However, the political situation across the Lothians and Fife remains stable, with the SNP retaining all their seats and the Liberal Democrats maintaining control of Fife North East.

Lorna Slater made history as the first Scottish Green Party Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) to win a constituency seat, securing Edinburgh Central with 12,680 votes.

Labour's James Dalgleish finished second with 8,098 votes, while the SNP incumbent Angus Robertson came third with 7,702 votes.

Slater, who previously served as a minister in the Scottish government under a power-sharing agreement with the SNP, expressed gratitude to voters who supported her.

Her victory was "a big step for the Scottish Green Party," she added.

Liberal Democrats' Gains in Edinburgh

In Edinburgh, Liberal Democrats leader Alex Cole-Hamilton successfully defended Edinburgh North Western, winning comfortably with 22,959 votes—more than twice the 9,943 votes secured by runner-up Lyn Jardine.

"We're getting incredible results in places in our wonderful country that have never really thought about the Lib Dems.
We're getting double the share of the vote we got last time, almost everywhere, which I think spells really good news for the regional lists."
He added: "I am really excited about the new parliamentary group that I will be welcoming to parliament next week."

The Liberal Democrats also won the newly created Edinburgh Northern seat, formed due to boundary changes. This constituency was previously divided among Edinburgh Central, Northern and Leith, and Edinburgh Western.

Sanne Dijkstra-Downie won Edinburgh Northern for the Lib Dems with 12,972 votes, while SNP candidate Euan Hyslop came second with 10,479 votes.

Labour Victory and SNP Holds in Edinburgh

Labour secured Edinburgh Southern, a seat affected by boundary changes since the last election. Daniel Johnson won with 16,963 votes.

Analysts noted that if the current boundaries had been in place in 2021, the SNP would have won this seat, which is why Labour's win is classified as a "gain" rather than a "hold."

The SNP retained Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith with Ben Macpherson receiving 13,630 votes, and Edinburgh South Western with Simita Kumar obtaining 11,727 votes.

The new boundaries were designed to encompass approximately 60,000 residents within each constituency.

SNP Holds in Midlothian and East Lothian

Colin Beattie of the SNP held Midlothian North with 11,250 votes, followed by Labour's Caitlin Stott with 8,754 votes.

Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale also remained under SNP control.

A significant change this year was the creation of the Edinburgh Eastern, Musselburgh and Tranent constituency, which the SNP retained with Kate Campbell winning 14,083 votes.

East Lothian Coast and Lammermuirs was another SNP hold, with 11,677 votes.

West Lothian and Fife Results

In West Lothian, the SNP maintained control of Almondvalley and Bathgate, as well as Linlithgow, which is grouped with East Falkirk.

Across Fife, there were no changes, with the SNP holding all seats except Fife North East.

In Fife North East, Liberal Democrat Willie Rennie secured over 60% of the vote.
