Search Continues for 18-Year-Old After Car Enters River Nene

Search continues for an 18-year-old male after a car carrying five youths entered the River Nene in Wisbech St Mary. A 16-year-old girl was found deceased in the vehicle; three others escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ongoing Search for Missing Teen After Vehicle Enters River

Search efforts persist for a missing 18-year-old male following an incident where a car left the road and entered the River Nene in Wisbech St Mary.

On Tuesday at approximately 20:20 GMT, a vehicle travelling along North Brink, a narrow road on the outskirts of Wisbech town centre, veered off the road and ended up in the river. The road runs adjacent to the River Nene, separated by a grass bank.

Five young individuals, aged between 16 and 18, were inside the vehicle at the time. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that two females and one male managed to escape the car and were subsequently transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

On Wednesday, divers recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl from the vehicle submerged in the river.

Police Response and Investigation

Detective Inspector Craig Wheeler provided an update on the ongoing operation, stating that the female's body was located within the vehicle and that efforts to locate the missing male would continue promptly.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police added that officers from the specialist operations unit would be conducting river searches throughout the day. Additionally, detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are supporting local inquiries and maintaining engagement with families and witnesses.

Det Insp Wheeler noted that tidal conditions in the river have made the recovery mission particularly challenging.

"Tidal conditions in the river made the 'recovery mission very, very difficult'."

Search teams have included divers from the Metropolitan Police, assisting in the recovery and search operations.

Community and Police Appeal

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.
