Full Closure of Pont y Borth Scheduled for 28 Hours

Pont y Borth, the bridge connecting Gwynedd and Anglesey, will be completely closed to vehicles from 14:00 on Friday until 18:00 on Saturday to safeguard communication cables.

Since Wednesday, one lane of the bridge has been closed daily between 10:00 and 18:00, with traffic lights controlling the flow of vehicles.

However, during the full closure period from 14:00 on Friday to 18:00 on Saturday, the bridge will be entirely closed to vehicles, although pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross.

Following this, one lane will again be closed daily until Friday, 22 May.

Ongoing Repair Work on the 200-Year-Old Bridge

Repair work on Pont y Borth, which is celebrating its 200th year, has been ongoing for several years and is expected to continue until at least spring 2027.

Purpose of the Closure

The Welsh Government stated that the closure is necessary:

"to address a direct safety risk associated with unprotected communication cables under the bridge and to implement measures to ensure the safety of the workforce on the bridge."
"The cables, which provide communication links to Anglesey and Ireland, must be protected before further work can proceed."
"Every effort will be made to minimize disruption while this important work is carried out, and we thank the community for their continued patience."
