Tributes to Officer Jess Turnbull
A young police officer who tragically died while on duty "always wanted to make a difference," according to her former headteacher.
Police Constable Jess Turnbull, aged 19, died after being struck by a vehicle in Cramlington, Northumberland, while responding to a separate traffic collision.
She was injured on Monday night and passed away in hospital on Wednesday.
Peter Douthwaite, headteacher at George Stephenson High School where Turnbull was once a pupil, described her as a "much-loved former student" who "lived a life of service."
"She was always cheerful, positive and kind, with a smile on her face and a warmth that brightened the day of those around her," he said.
"Even as a young person, Jessica wanted to make a difference, so it is no surprise that she chose a career dedicated to helping and protecting others.
"She lived a life of service, making a positive contribution to her community and touching the lives of many people along the way."
The school in Killingworth laid flowers outside the Northumbria Police station where Turnbull was based.
"We have lost a genuinely lovely person who will be remembered with enormous fondness by those who taught and knew her," Douthwaite added.
"On behalf of everyone at the school, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Jessica's family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time."
Details of the Incident
The young officer had been dispatched to attend a collision involving a Land Rover Freelander and a Ford Explorer on the A189 Spine Road at 23:10 BST on Monday. During the response, she was injured when a black Mercedes collided with a marked police vehicle.
A 73-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on bail pending further investigation.
Police and Community Response
Northumbria Police paid tribute to Turnbull, who joined the force in September of the previous year, describing her as a "dedicated and committed" officer.
Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth highlighted the risks police officers face daily and expressed sympathy for those affected by the loss.
"No words can ease the pain they will be experiencing at this time, but my thoughts are with PC Jess Turnbull's family, friends and colleagues as they come to terms with this unimaginable loss," she said.
"She will be remembered in so many ways, and with gratitude for committing herself to a career of putting others first."
