Plans for a Memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in Wales
Queen Elizabeth II passed away on 8 September 2022 at the age of 96, after reigning for 70 years.
The UK Government has confirmed that funding will be allocated towards erecting a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in Wales.
This forms part of broader plans by the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, which will include a permanent memorial in St James's Park in London, the establishment of a new charitable trust to revitalize community assets across the UK, and a digital memorial that will allow people to share their own memories of the Queen.
The Cabinet Office stated that the UK Government will provide "capital funding" towards memorials in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland between 2026 and 2029.
There are currently no details regarding the total cost, location, type of memorial, or timeline—these responsibilities will fall to the Welsh Government in due course.
Models of the permanent memorial in London, along with information about the trust and the digital memorial, are being displayed at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff on Friday, alongside locations in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, Lord Janvrin, expressed hope that local communities across the UK will benefit from the new trust established in the Queen's name.
"We hope that local communities across the UK will benefit from the new trust in the Queen's name," said Lord Janvrin.
He added that the digital memorial "will enable people across the country, the Commonwealth, and beyond to share their memories of the late Queen, to build a living archive of her reign for future generations."
