Paul Davies, former Welsh Conservative leader, aims to become the next Llywydd of Senedd Cymru, seeking support from Plaid Cymru or Reform UK as Elin Jones steps down.

Paul Davies Confirms Bid to Become Next Llywydd

Paul Davies, the former leader of the Welsh Conservatives, has confirmed his intention to become the next Llywydd of Senedd Cymru.

Elin Jones of Plaid Cymru has held the position since 2016 but has already announced her intention to step down. Consequently, a new individual is expected to assume the role. If successful, Mr Davies would be the first Conservative to be selected as Llywydd in the Senedd.

For this to occur, he will need to secure support from Plaid Cymru or Reform UK groups first.

Speaking as the Member of the Senedd for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Mr Davies stated that he has the

"profiad i hyrwyddo Senedd Cymru"

(experience to promote Senedd Cymru).

The vote for Llywydd could take place as early as Tuesday. No other candidates have yet come forward.

Elin Jones, who has served in the role since 2016, has already announced her intention to step down.

Statement from Paul Davies

In a statement, Mr Davies said there has been

"llawer o ddyfalu wedi bod ers yr etholiad ynghylch pwy fydd yn cymryd rôl y Llywydd nesaf yn y Senedd"

(much speculation since the election about who will take on the role of the next Llywydd in the Senedd).

He added,

"Hoffwn ei wneud hi'n glir, ar ôl ymgynghori â chydweithwyr ac ar ôl cael fy annog i wneud hynny gan eraill, y byddaf yn cynnig fy enw i fod y Llywydd nesaf."

Mr Davies also emphasized his qualifications, stating,

"Mae gen i'r profiad i hyrwyddo Senedd Cymru ac mae gen i ddealltwriaeth glir o'i Rheolau Sefydlog a'i gweithdrefnau."

He highlighted his previous roles, noting,

"Fel y Llywydd Dros Dro yn y Senedd flaenorol, ac fel cyn-Gadeirydd Pwyllgor a Rheolwr Busnes yn Senedd Cymru, mae gen i'r sgiliau angenrheidiol i ymgymryd â'r rôl bwysig hon."
