Fire Response in Walthamstow
Approximately 125 firefighters were deployed to tackle a fire impacting homes, gardens, sheds, and a railway embankment in Walthamstow, east London.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that two rest centres were established locally to support affected residents.
The brigade received the initial call near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street just before 18:30 BST, with over 100 calls related to the incident following. There were no reported injuries.
The fire was brought under control by 22:35, and the cause remains under investigation.
Extent of Damage
Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall detailed the damage, stating:
"One house was on fire, a second home suffered damage to a rear extension and the gardens of 30 properties were affected."
Earlier, the fire brigade advised residents in the vicinity to keep windows and doors closed due to the significant smoke produced by the fire.
Impact on Transport and Community
Motorists were advised to avoid the area, including Wood Street, Shernhall Street, and surrounding roads, as road closures were implemented.
The Weaver Overground line experienced partial closure in response to the railway embankment fire, with disruptions expected to continue into the following morning.
Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy shared on Instagram Sunday evening that "hundreds" of people had been affected by the fire.
"It would make you cry to see what our community's done," she added, thanking locals for donations of food and water brought to the rest centres.
