Renewed Effort to Ban Fox Hunting in Northern Ireland
A bill seeking to prohibit hunting wild animals with dogs in Northern Ireland has been reintroduced, five years after its initial rejection by the Northern Ireland Assembly.
The private member's bill is being presented by John Blair of the Alliance Party.
In 2021, the bill was defeated by a vote of 45 to 38. Sinn Féin instructed its Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to vote against the legislation, expressing support for regulation rather than an outright ban.
Northern Ireland remains the only part of the United Kingdom where fox hunting with dogs is still legally permitted.
At the time of the previous vote, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) held the agriculture and environment portfolio within the Northern Ireland Executive. Its then-minister, Edwin Poots, stated he would not support the bill.
Currently, the Alliance Party holds the agriculture and environment brief, with Andrew Muir serving as minister.
On Friday, Sinn Féin members at the party's annual ard fheis (conference) voted by a narrow margin in favor of supporting a ban on fox hunting.
There are concerns that this policy shift could impact the party's rural voter base.
Party president Mary Lou McDonald has previously indicated her support for a ban, emphasizing that the vote on fox hunting reflects the party members' role in setting policy.

Sinn Féin has not yet announced its position regarding the new attempt to ban fox hunting in Northern Ireland.
The legislation was formally introduced on Monday; however, no debate took place at that time.
A second reading will be scheduled at a later date to determine whether the bill can proceed through the legislative process or face rejection once again.
Legislation on Hunting Across the UK
In 2024, the League Against Cruel Sports and the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) jointly launched a petition calling for hunting animals for sport to be made illegal.
England and Wales implemented legislation banning hunting with dogs two decades ago.
Scotland's legislation, originally enacted in 2002, was replaced by a new act in 2023. This legislation permits some hunting with dogs under limited circumstances, such as preventing the spread of disease.
However, it remains illegal in Scotland to chase and kill a wild mammal using a dog.
Northern Ireland continues to be the only region within the UK where fox hunting with dogs is still permitted.
