Three Men Released on Bail Following Arrests Over Alleged China Spying

Three men, including the husband of a Labour MP, have been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of spying for China, according to the Metropolitan Police.

David Taylor, 39, who is married to Joani Reid, the Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, along with two other men aged 43 and 68, face accusations of assisting a foreign intelligence service.

The arrests were carried out by counter-terrorism officers at locations in London and Wales on Wednesday. The men have not been named by the police.

MP's Statement on Husband's Arrest

Following the arrest of Taylor, Reid issued a statement clarifying her position regarding her husband's activities.

"I am not part of my husband's business activities and have never seen anything to make me suspect he had broken any law," Reid said.

Background on David Taylor

David Taylor is a former adviser to Welsh Labour politicians and was previously a Labour candidate for the North Wales police and crime commissioner role.

Details of Arrests and Searches

Taylor was arrested in London. The 43-year-old man was detained in Pontyclun, South Wales, while the 68-year-old suspect was arrested in Powys, mid-Wales.

Police conducted searches at the addresses where the men were arrested, as well as additional properties in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff.

Charges and Legal Framework

All three men have been charged under section three of the National Security Act, introduced in 2023, which targets individuals suspected of assisting foreign intelligence services against UK interests.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that counter-terrorism officers in Wales and Scotland supported the operation.

Police Statement on Threat Level

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, addressed concerns about public safety related to the arrests.

"We do not believe there to be any imminent or direct threat related to the arrests," she said.
