First Sex-Based Harassment Conviction Leads to Community Order

A man has received a 12-month community order after being convicted in a pioneering sex-based harassment case prosecuted by the British Transport Police.

David Stroud, aged 44 and from Dartford, Kent, was found guilty of grabbing a woman's hair and asking if he could kiss her while on a train traveling from Hastings, East Sussex, to London.

His arrest occurred shortly after the implementation of a new law prohibiting harassment motivated by a person's sex.

Stroud pleaded guilty at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court in May.

Victim's Statement Highlights Impact

During the sentencing, the woman involved provided a statement expressing the emotional toll the incident has taken on her.

"I felt trapped, powerless and petrified," she said.

"I always feel the need to have company when I leave the house now," she added.

"I can never truly go anywhere on my own, simply because I'm a woman."

Details of the Incident

The court heard that Stroud sat next to the woman while she was on the phone to her boyfriend during the train journey.

He was described as "constantly leaning" on her and referred to her as "magical."
