Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter of Mother's Partner in Kilrea

Cornelius O'Neill, aged 56, died following a stabbing incident in the Tamlaght O'Crilly area of Kilrea, County Londonderry, in August 2023.

Court Proceedings

Jason Tyrone Spence, 36, from Millburn Street, Cookstown, County Tyrone, appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday. He admitted to unlawfully killing Cornelius O'Neill and possessing a hunting knife on 26 August 2023.

Spence's barrister informed the court that the manslaughter plea was entered

"on the basis of diminished responsibility"

The prosecution accepted the manslaughter plea after consulting with the deceased's family, the court was informed.

A prosecution barrister requested that the murder charge remain on record, a request which the judge approved.

Next Steps

The court was advised that Spence will undergo a psychological evaluation. Additionally, a pre-sentence report and victim impact statements will be prepared.

Madam Justice McBride stated she would review the case in September to schedule a date for plea and sentencing.

Spence was remanded in custody pending the next hearing.
