Man Sentenced for Raping Two Pregnant Women

A 21-year-old man, Jack Murray, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping two pregnant women in St Andrews. The offences occurred in 2023 and 2024, involving two separate victims.

Murray attacked the first woman in 2023 and subsequently raped a second woman repeatedly the following year in the same town. The court heard that he also threatened the first woman, prevented her from leaving the property where the assault took place, and detained her against her will.

The trial revealed that Murray engaged in threatening behaviour towards the second woman as well. Throughout the proceedings, Murray denied the offences. He attended the sentencing via video link.

Judicial Remarks and Post-Release Supervision

Judge Lord Summers sentenced Murray to 10 years imprisonment and ordered that he be supervised for three years following his release. Additionally, Murray was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Addressing the defence advocate Iain Paterson KC, Lord Summers described Murray's conduct as:

"appalling."

The judge further stated:

"I think he has issues which need to be addressed."

Defence Position and Legal Considerations

Paterson informed the court that Murray maintained his trial position, denying sexual offending but acknowledging some bad behaviour towards the complainants:

"There is some acknowledgement of bad behaviour on the part of the accused towards the complainers. However, there is no acceptance of sexual offending."

Paterson also noted that Murray met the legal definition of being a child at the time the offences were committed.

Judge's Final Remarks

In sentencing, Lord Summers acknowledged Murray's youth and immaturity at the time of the offences:

"I accept that you were young and immature at the time of these offences."
