Man Fined for Racist Comments During Protest

A man has been fined for making racist comments during an asylum seeker protest in Aberdeen.

Gavin Turpie, 52, was found guilty after a trial of making the remarks last year.

They included a

"slogan referencing racist ideology"
, as well as sexualised comments.

He had denied offences under the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021.

Turpie, of Alford, Aberdeenshire, was fined £750 at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday, with an additional surcharge payment of £40 ordered.

The crimes were committed in Don Street in Aberdeen on 29 October last year.

It was an area which had witnessed asylum seeker accommodation protests.

Counter protests were also held.

Turpie was told to pay the £790 fine at £100 per month.
