Man Charged in Belfast Knife Attack Advised to Obtain Legal Counsel

A man charged with a serious knife attack in north Belfast has been advised by a judge to seek legal representation due to the gravity of the charges he faces.

Hadi Alodid, aged 30, residing on Duncairn Avenue in the northern part of the city, was charged last month with attempted murder following a violent incident that occurred in early June.

The victim, Stephen Ogilvie, who is in his 40s, suffered the loss of his left eye and also sustained damage to his right eye as a result of the attack.

The incident led to significant disorder within Belfast.

Court Proceedings via Videolink

During a brief hearing at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, Hadi Alodid appeared remotely via videolink from Maghaberry prison.

He was handcuffed and accompanied on either side by prison officers throughout the hearing.

The court was informed that the case will now proceed to the Crown Court, with a hearing date to be scheduled within four weeks.

Charges and Evidence Presented

The proceedings included translation services provided by an Arabic interpreter. The prosecution outlined the charges against Hadi Alodid, which include attempted murder, possession of a blade in a public place, and threatening and abusive behaviour.

The prosecution also indicated that certain evidence remains outstanding, including medical reports, mobile phone data, and witness statements.

Judge's Advice and Defendant's Response

The presiding judge emphasized the seriousness of the charges and suggested that the defendant seek legal representation.

"You are facing serious charges and should seek legal representation,"

The judge inquired if the defendant wished to make any statement. The question was translated by the interpreter; however, Hadi Alodid did not respond and maintained a forward gaze.
