Cardiff Crown Court heard that Beaumont's behavior changed after they returned home from a Wetherspoons pub in Monmouth in September 2025, where they had been drinking together. Upon arriving home, Beaumont began cleaning and then initiated the assault.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Beaumont, who resides in Monmouth, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order and mandated to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

Details of the Assault

Prosecutor Tim Lewis detailed the incident, stating that Beaumont said to the victim,

"What are you watching this old woman's programme for? I shouldn't have to do this."

Following this remark, Beaumont struck his stepfather with the Hoover and then punched him in the face. The victim called emergency services before Beaumont punched him three more times.

Mitigation and Victim's Response

Beaumont's defense lawyer, Jeffrey Jones, described his client as "ashamed, embarrassed and sorry," noting that he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Judge Recorder Andrew Hammond characterized the assault as an "entirely unprovoked attack" on an elderly man who was "shocked and frightened." He added,

"He still wonders why it happened. It was a shocking event which was clearly out of character. No one understands why you did it."

The court was informed that Sumner wishes to rebuild his relationship with Beaumont and had provided a character reference on his behalf.
