Man Arrested After Entering Mosque with Weapons

A man has been arrested following an incident at Manchester Central Mosque where he allegedly entered carrying weapons including an axe and a knife.

Police responded to reports of suspicious behaviour involving two men at the mosque in Victoria Park at approximately 20:40 GMT on Tuesday.

A statement from the mosque indicated that volunteers challenged one of the men after he entered during Taraweeh prayers and subsequently contacted the police.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon and possession of Class B drugs. Authorities are currently seeking to locate the second individual involved.

Superintendent Simon Nasim stated that no injuries occurred and no threats were made during the incident.

Volunteers observed an axe inside the bag and escorted the white man to a separate room.

Additional Weapons Discovered

Further inspection revealed other weapons, including a knife and a hammer.

Police were called, and the white man was arrested. The black man had left the premises before officers arrived.

The mosque credited the "swift and responsible actions" of its volunteers with potentially preventing a "far more serious" situation.

"The Muslim community in the UK has experienced a notable rise in threats and hostility over recent years," the mosque said.
"The increase in Islamophobic incidents is a serious concern, and greater resources are urgently needed to address this growing and real risk.
We will continue to cooperate fully with the police and urge all mosque attendees to remain vigilant."

The mosque also provided CCTV footage to the police to assist with the investigation.

Police Response and Community Safety

Supt Nasim announced that increased patrols would be conducted in the area while the investigation continues.

"There's no place for weapons on our streets and we are committed to ensure all our communities feel safe to worship in peace and go about their daily lives without fear.
Anyone committing such offences will be dealt with in accordance with the law."
