Legal Representation Update for Brandon Rainey

A man accused of the murder of Chloe Mitchell in Ballymena informed Belfast Crown Court that he has yet to secure new legal representation. This development follows the recent withdrawal of his previous solicitors, who stated they were "professionally compromised."

Brandon Rainey, aged 29, currently held on remand in Maghaberry, faces charges of murder and attempting to prevent the lawful burial of Chloe Mitchell's body.

Chloe Mitchell, 21, was killed in Ballymena in June 2023, with her remains discovered eight days after her disappearance.

After his defence team withdrew last week, Rainey was required to update the court on his legal representation status by Monday.

During the review hearing on Monday before Madam Justice McBride, Rainey reported that one law firm declined to take on his case, and another solicitor in Lurgan indicated he "wouldn't have the right amount of time he would need" to represent him.

The trial, initially scheduled to begin on Monday 9 March, has been postponed to Monday 13 April.

Rainey expressed his desire for legal representation but described the process of contacting numerous law firms while in Maghaberry as a "rigamarole."

"He did want legal representation but that it was a 'rigamarole' to contact a large number of law firms while on remand in Maghaberry."

The judge acknowledged Rainey's intent to obtain legal counsel and remarked that "in a case of this nature, that is to be welcomed."

"He wished to engage legal representation and 'in a case of this nature, that is to be welcomed'."

Senior prosecution counsel David Russell KC added:

"He is also entitled to a reasonable opportunity to do so."

The judge adjourned the matter until Friday to allow Rainey, either personally or through family members, to secure new solicitors and defence barristers as soon as possible.

Details of Chloe Mitchell's Case
