Culture Secretary Criticizes 's Response to Abuse Allegations

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, has expressed that she is "not satisfied" with 's response to the government regarding allegations of rape and sexual assault made by women who appeared on the reality TV show Married At First Sight UK (MAFS UK).

Last month, the show faced a major crisis after BBC Panorama reported rape allegations from two female cast members. The men accused have denied these allegations.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday, Nandy acknowledged that MPs would be "horrified and disgusted" by the claims and stated she would be engaging with "in the coming week" to discuss the matter further.

In response to the allegations, has removed all episodes of MAFS UK from its streaming service and commissioned an external review focused on contributor welfare for the show. Addressing MPs, Nandy said:

"I know members across this House will be horrified and disgusted at the serious allegations of abuse against women in the TV industry that have emerged recently.
Everyone has the right to be safe and treated with dignity.
My honourable friend has met with recently about the serious allegations that have emerged around Married At First Sight. We are not satisfied as a government with the response that we have received, and I will be discussing this further with in the coming week."

Details of the Panorama Investigation

The BBC Panorama investigation into MAFS UK revealed that two women alleged they were raped during filming, while a third woman reported experiencing a non-consensual sex act. All three men involved deny the allegations.

The women have stated that did not provide sufficient protection for them during the production of the show.

Following the May broadcast, has faced intense scrutiny regarding the claims made about the popular reality series.

At that time, the prime minister's official spokesperson described the allegations as "extremely serious" and emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation. The media regulator Ofcom also stated that broadcasters must exercise "due care" concerning the welfare of participants on such shows.

The Metropolitan Police encouraged "anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault" after participating in the show to come forward and contact them.

In the wake of the allegations, holiday company Tui ended its sponsorship of both the UK show and its Australian spin-off.

's Initial Response and Apology

"I do believe that our handling of concerns at the time was appropriate but as I only took this role up recently, I wanted this looked at again,"

she said during a press briefing on Wednesday marking the release of the network's annual report.

Lawyers representing CPL, the independent production company responsible for the UK version of Married at First Sight, stated that its welfare system is "gold standard" and industry-leading. They affirmed that CPL acted appropriately in all cases related to the allegations.

Show Popularity and Future Broadcast Plans

The UK version of Married at First Sight has aired for 10 seasons and is broadcast during prime time on 's sister channel, E4.

The show regularly attracts audiences exceeding three million viewers, making it one of 's flagship programs.
