Joey Barton Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Assault
Joey Barton, the former professional footballer, has been remanded in custody after being charged with assaulting the headteacher of a school for children with additional needs. The incident reportedly took place outside a golf club in Liverpool at approximately 9pm on Sunday.
Barton, aged 43, was one of two men detained by police following emergency services' response to reports of a serious assault on a man. The alleged victim, Kevin Lynch, is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital, receiving treatment for severe injuries to his face and body.
Details of the Alleged Victim and Incident
Kevin Lynch, 51, is the founder and headteacher of NexGen Academy, a Liverpool-based school catering to children with additional needs. He is also known for his previous role as manager of the Merseyside non-league football team Prescot Cables.
NexGen Academy has expressed that it is undergoing a distressing period and has requested not to be contacted by the media.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Barton appeared at Liverpool magistrates’ court, arriving in a prison van, alongside Gary O’Grady, 50. Both men face joint charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, which involves the deliberate, malicious, or reckless infliction of serious violence.
During a brief hearing, District Judge James Hatton refused Barton bail, remanding him in custody. This decision means Barton will remain in prison until at least his next court appearance in four weeks, unless he successfully applies for bail beforehand.
O’Grady, a self-employed roofer, was released on bail with conditions prohibiting him from contacting the alleged victim or entering the golf club where the arrest occurred. Both men are scheduled to appear in court again on 7 April.
The court was informed that both Barton and O’Grady "vehemently deny" the charges against them.
Eyewitness Accounts and Police Investigation
An eyewitness told the Liverpool Echo on Tuesday that they observed a man on the ground "with blood on him" before contacting emergency services by dialing 999.
"When my partner went to work yesterday morning they had taken the cordon down and they were washing the pavement. That’s why there’s sand all over the pavement from where they washed it."
Police officers remained at the scene on Tuesday morning, conducting fingertip searches behind a cordon. Officers were also seen inspecting nearby gardens, while sniffer dogs were deployed at the golf club, located about 8 miles east of Liverpool city centre.
Background on Joey Barton
Joey Barton’s football career spanned 15 years, during which he played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Rangers. He transitioned into football management in 2018, leading Fleetwood Town and later Bristol Rovers until 2023.
Related Legal Proceedings
Barton’s arrest was confirmed earlier on Tuesday during a high court libel hearing involving football pundit Eni Aluko. The hearing concerned a series of social media posts made by Barton in 2024. Barton was unable to attend the hearing due to his arrest.
Aluko’s barrister, Gervase de Wilde, urged the judge to reject a request to adjourn the hearing, stating that Aluko’s claim for damages should be considered unopposed as Barton’s legal representatives did not attend court.
Mr Justice Lavender awarded Aluko £339,000 in damages but granted Barton seven days to appeal given his current circumstances.
