Investigation into Royal Protection Officers at Windsor Castle

Police officers tasked with safeguarding the Royal Family at Windsor Castle are under investigation following allegations that they fell asleep while on duty and left their posts unattended.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that its Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) has initiated an "urgent investigation" concerning several officers assigned to protective duties at the Berkshire castle.

The initial allegations were reported by The Sun and involve members of the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection team.

The Metropolitan Police stated:

"The alleged behaviour falls below the high standards expected of officers, particularly in frontline protective roles."

The DPS is currently evaluating whether the officers involved should be placed on restricted duties, with a decision anticipated "before the end of next week."

The force also indicated that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been notified and determined that the investigation will be conducted locally by the Metropolitan Police.

Context and Responsibilities

Windsor Castle serves as one of the official residences of King Charles III and is frequently used by senior Royal Family members for both private and state events.

Officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection team are charged with guarding royal residences and ensuring the safety of Royal Family members.

Buckingham Palace has declined to provide any comment on the ongoing investigation.
