Boy Who Died in Lake Could Not Swim, Inquest Reveals

A 16-year-old boy who died after encountering difficulties in a lake during the recent heatwave was unable to swim, an inquest has heard.

Muhammed Secka's body was recovered the day after emergency services responded to an incident at Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire on Bank Holiday Monday.

At Doncaster Coroner's Court, it was reported that a post-mortem examination indicated "features in keeping with drowning," though the coroner emphasized that this finding was preliminary and subject to further investigation.

Muhammed is among at least 17 individuals who lost their lives after experiencing trouble in open water during the recent heatwave.

The inquest into Muhammed's death was opened and subsequently adjourned to a date to be scheduled by senior coroner Nicola Mundy.

Coroner's officer Siobhan Golightly provided details during the brief hearing, stating that Muhammed had visited the country park with friends on 25 May.

"At approximately 19:00 BST, he had been in the water with friends when he disappeared from view.
The alarm was raised and the emergency services were contacted."

Golightly added that Muhammed's body was found in the water in the early hours of the following day and that paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

"It's reported that Muhammed was not able to swim."

No family members were present at the hearing.

Tributes and Fundraising Efforts

Following Muhammed's death, friends and family initiated online fundraising campaigns.

"Muhammed was a much-loved son, friend, student and member of the community who brought light, laughter and kindness to those around him.
His loss has deeply affected everyone who knew him, and the pain felt by his family and loved ones is unimaginable."

Calls for Safety Near Open Water

The death of Muhammed, along with several others in recent weeks, has led emergency services, families, and campaigners to urge young people to avoid open water areas.

Among the other victims during the heatwave were Reco Puttock, 13, who encountered difficulties at Leadbeater Dam near Halifax; Palwasha Akbar, 13, who went missing in a river in North Yorkshire; and Mackenzie Swift, 11, who entered the River Don in Mexborough.
