Funeral Director Admits Serious Offences

A funeral director has admitted to preventing the burials of 30 bodies and stealing donations made to charities by mourners.

Robert Bush, 48, was arrested following a police investigation into Hull-based Legacy Independent Funeral Directors after concerns were raised in March 2024 regarding the care of the deceased.

Originally from East Yorkshire and currently residing in West Yorkshire, Bush pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court to 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial, as well as one count of theft related to charitable donations.

He had previously admitted to presenting families with the ashes of strangers and fraudulently selling funeral plans. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date.

During the hearing, Judge Mr Justice Hilliard stated:

"A custodial sentence is inevitable in this case".

Bush was granted bail until sentencing.
